Home Fish Aquariums 101

Home fish aquariums are a way to duplicate the natural environment of fish in a closed environment. In English, a place to keep some pet fish! Aquariums and fish tanks started to become popular around the nineteen fifties and have taken the world by storm turning into one of the most popular hobbies out there. A properly maintained aquarium is an enjoyable thing to view and can also add a fantastic decorative touch to any room. More important than that, is the learning experience for kids that this hobby provides.

Aesthetics play an important role in regards to the aquarium and the ones that are the most interesting show off the aquarium tank itself. Besides this basic piece of equipment, you will need to buy some sort of light source, an aquarium filter system and an aquarium heater. You can find aquarium fish tanks in many different sizes, shapes and prices. The most important factor is to decide what type of fish you would like to keep, and how much space you have in the room. You can pretty much find all of these things in your local pet shop, or if you are looking for some real bargains, you can find them online.

I have fond memories of the little fish bowl that I had as a kid, and also remember with not many fond memories when the goldfish died. This type of bowl does not really recreate the natural environment of tropical fish, and if you really want to keep your new aquatic pets alive, you need to invest a bit of money on a real fish tank. Tropical fish need to live in water with constant movement which is called aquarium aeration. Another important fact is that because your aquarium is a closed system, the water must be kept clean and mineral and chemical levels maintained.

Most of this can be accomplished by using a water test kit regularly so you can confirm that the water being used really is safe for your fish. Regular tap water for example has many impurities and chemicals used to treat the water, and may not be very healthy for your fish. In many cases distilled water is a better choice. When changing the water, you should remove about 20 percent and add new water.

Make sure that when you buy home fish aquariums that you be sure to make sure there are no cracks in the glass and if buying online, make sure of the guarantee and return policy.
