Betta Fish Care

betta fish careOne of the most common fish sold in pet stores today, apart from the gold fish, is the betta fish, also known in many circles as the Siamese fighting fish. These fish are great to keep mainly because they are so easy to care for. Basically, the only betta fish care maintenance needed is a small bowl or tank. You don’t even need to have an aeration or filter system in place. Since these fish originally came for the rice paddies in Malaya and Thailand, they do not need much oxygen in order to thrive.

There are many people out there who insist that a small tank is better than a bowl. The reason for this is that a tank can be decorated easier and since it is probably bigger than your average bowl, the water needs to be changed less often. Another advantage is that you can add some other fish to the tank. Before you say, “but I thought they are called fighting fish and can’t be left alone with other fish”, that is kind of an urban legend. In actuality, they can live with other fish, just not another betta fish, so be careful and keep that one fact in mind.

Feed your betta fish once a day with betta fish food that you can buy at your local pet shop. Incidentally, if you have ever had these types of fish before, and noticed little bubbles at the top of the bowl or tank and wondered what they are, they are the formation of a nest.

Now in the annals of love and reproduction, the betta fish probably have some of the strangest habits around. The males are very flashy and try to impress the females with this. If the female is impressed enough, she will spawn and then the male fertilizes the eggs, and puts them in these bubble nests. Then the real fun begins. They don’t call them fighting fish for nothing! If the female at this point doesn’t get out of dodge quickly enough, then the male does his black widow spider imitation on the female and that’s that for that romance. He will also eat some the young recently hatched betta fish.
