Anyone who has kept a n aquarium knows how dirty the water gets. After all, even though fish are tiny, they are also rather sloppy animals, and the water wishes constant maintenance. Even if you make it a practice to change the water and rinse out the aquarium on a once-a-week basis, you’re still going to want some assistance with the monumental task of maintaining a healthy environment for your fish. One of the things that will help you is a good filter. Filters can be biological or chemical, but one of the most effective filters you can buy is one that uses diatomaceous earth as it’s filtering medium.

As the name indicates, diatomaceous earth comes from the soil. Diatoms are small organisms that die and leave fossilized remains in the soil. By so doing, they fill the soil with minute cavities which can be employed effectively in filtering debris out of water, including the water in fish tanks. These are the same types of filters which are utilized in pools and municipal applications, and they are fantastic for capturing even the tiniest particles in your water. In fact, they corral particles that are too little to be caught in most other types of water filters.

Vortex Diatom Filters are high-speed mechanical filters which are engineered to fine filter water in aquariums without disturbing the natural, and desirable, level of bacteria. Although many of us have been conditioned to think of bacteria as being a bad thing, there are many alternative categories of good bacteria that we rely on every day, so it is important that we not rid any ecosystem of the good bacteria that it needs for plants and animals to survive. A filter which damages the balance could prove hazardous for your fish.

A System one Pressure Filter from Aquarium Products will polish tank water at the rate of 300 gallons per hour. It may be employed both in saltwater and freshwater aquariums successfully. By filling the filter jar with diatomaceous earth, which can be acquired separately, it will run for roughly three hours at a time. It has to be turned off after three hours, because running it longer will cause the motor to burn up. However, in that 3 hours, you will have filtered and polished the best quality of water on the market today.

Although it may appear a little weird to use soil to clean your tank, diatomaceous aquarium filters are so popular that they are on back order at most online shops. With persistence you will be able to find the filter you need to keep your aquarium clean and your fish healthy.

I saw an interesting post on another blog today by a man asking about what kind of filter to use with a 600 liter tank. Now i thought that there would be some consistent answers to this question, but as in everything else in life, there were 3 answers and differing opinions on the subject. The blog post is at http://home-aquarium-store.co.uk/2009/08/need-info-on-what-filter-to-put-in-600-l-tropical-fish-tank/ so you can read it directly.

One person suggested he use a hagging filter and not an under gravel filter. A more complete answer and I quote”

“I have been keeping fish for a long, long time, and around 3 times I have tried using UGF’s each time they screwed up and my tank was extremely filthy and created an unlivable environment for my fish. I now use half submerged filters – and my tank has never been cleaner. My fish seemed much happier when I installed the half submersible filter and became more active.

As Graham R said, using An aerator in the tank will prove a very good idea as it does indeed oxygenate the water and the fish enjoy swimming through the bubbles it pumps out. As well as oxygenating the water the bubbles also add a sense of realism to your setup. (Depending on what design you make your tank – e.g. rift lake, estuary etc).

Make sure its a quality filter as well so it doesn’t break or malfunction. If you live in Australia (might be USA as well not sure) but a good brand of filter which I have been using and recommending to people like those in your situation is an Aqua One Half Submersible Filter. I have still got one of my older Aqua ones in a goldfish tank for my cousin and it is in perfect working order.”

I found it interesting. If you ever have questions and you are not sure about what you find on the Internet, do not be afraid to check with your pet shop pros for help.

These systems not only get rid of pollutants, but also chemicals which can harm your aquatic pets.

There are several types of aquarium filters, such as mechanical filtration, chemical filtration and biological filtration systems. The first type of filter system is mechanical. This works by physically trapping particles of dirt and grime which are suspended in the water. Since they are too big to pass through the fibers of the filter, they get trapped, therefore removing them from the aquarium tank. It is at this point that you will need to go in and change the filter. Polyester is one of the main fibers used for these filters and can be found in the form of pads, pressed fibers, fluffs, or woven. Mechanical aquarium filters have many accessories found in a mechanical aquarium filtration system work together to keep your aquarium clean and healthy for your fish.
