Aquarium Stands and Your Room

aquarium standsYou have planned to buy that home aquarium of your dreams, but have you really considered where you are going to place it, and whether or not you will need aquarium stands? The general rule of thumb is that anything over about 20 gallons will definitely need one, and they are not always cheap. Some aquariums can weigh in excess of 200 pounds when filled, and it is possible that if you wanted to place it on top of a table or other piece of furniture, it would not hold up. One of the best strategies for purchasing one is to comparison shop.

The first thing you will have to decide is what type of aquarium you are going to have. There is a very big difference between a glass aquarium and an acrylic aquarium. They both need different kinds of supports. A glass one can work if it is supported around the outside edges, but the acrylic one must be supported along the full length and width of the bottom.

One aesthetic concern that you should be aware of is the type of trim that the aquarium has. If you really want it to look great, try and match up the trim. If you are purchasing the tank and the stand at the same time, this will probably not be a big problem, but if you buy them separately, make sure you keep this detail in mind so you will be happy with how it looks.

One other thing you should think about is how the aquarium will fit in with the general decor of the room. You should think of the stand as another piece of furniture. There are many types of wood finishes plus high gloss ones. You can also paint them if you want to, but there are also metal aquarium stands available which might just fit the bill.

Here are a few examples of some of the types of stands available.
