Aquarium Lighting and Your Fish

aquarium lightingSome of the most important and unfortunately sometimes overlooked parts of the aquarium are aquarium lighting and aquarium heating. An aquarium is an artificial environment, so it is imperative to try and simulate natural conditions as much as humanly possible. The life and health of your fish depend on it. There are many things to think about, including the correct water, food and filtration system. Although these things are very important, do not overlook the fact that light and heat are equally important.

An aquarium lamp or fish tank light is extremely important because most fish are accustomed to some degree of sunlight. The main exceptions to this are deep sea fish. Although the needs of fish being exposed to some degree of sunlight are not as important as non-aquatic animals, it is still there.

There are many types of light sources, one of the most popular being fluorescent lighting. These aquarium lamps are cool, cheap, easy to replace and maintain, do not consume a lot of power and for a majority of aquariums, are enough.

There are some other ones as well, such as the classic incandescent lamp, which uses more power but give out a brighter slightly harsher lighting. They tend to run hotter and are better for tropical fish since naturally they would be more comfortable in a warmer climate.

Compact light however use less power and generate less heat, but as a drawback give off less light. These are better for deep water fish and breeds which are better suited for darker cooler environments. If your aquarium has a large number of aquatic plants, it may need to have a metal halide lamp.

This type of lighting duplicates sunlight with a low intensity level, simulating that which would breach the surface of the water and reach the bottom where of course, most aquatic plants call home. Metal halide lamps are available in several strengths, and you need to match these in color and intensity according to the type of fish and plants you have. It is sort of a delicate balancing act that must be performed perfectly. Make sure the intensity is not too much, as this is just as bad as no light.

As always, it is the best course of action to check with your local pet shop when you choose your fish and plants to make sure that you have the proper aquarium lighting in your home fish tank.
